The Role of Play in Children’s Learning

Aims

The learners will gain an awareness of the importance of ‘play’ and how it can have a positive effect on a child’s development.

Outcomes

At the end of the session the learner will be able to:

  •  Define the term ‘play’ and explain it’s importance in a child’s development
  •  Identify ways in which ‘play’ can provide a foundation for on-going education and development
  •  Demonstrate practical ways in which ‘play’ can become part of a creative learning environment to develop a child’s core skills, problem solving, reasoning, numeracy etc

Duration:   3 hours

Course content:

  •  Define the term ‘play’
  •  The theory of ‘learning through play’ (Lev Vygotsky)
  •  How children perceive play
  •  The importance of play in a child’s development
  •  Linking play with the educational requirements in the UK curriculum
    •  8 categories of play – Sand, Dramatic, Water, Dough and Clay, Table Top, Small World, Construction, Creative Play
    •  Practical ways in which the curriculum can be implemented using the 8 categories of play
  •  Observing play
    •  The importance of observing a child at play
