Nutrition and Hydration

To introduce those working with the elderly; either in residential or domiciliary care to the importance of nutrition and hydration. This requires understanding of basic nutritional needs for those they will care for in the work place and the practical application of the principle requirements.

Outcomes

At the end of the session the learner will be able to understand:

  • What nutrition is and why it is so important
  • How poor nutrition affects health and wellbeing
  • What hydration is and its effect on the body
  • The consequences of poor hydration
  • How to make practical application of these points

Course content:

  • Definition of nutrition
  • Identify what is needed in a balanced diet and why this is important
  • Make practical application of these principles by setting menus for different sections of the community
  • Review sugar and salt content in various foods, concentrating on the daily allowance of the service user
  • Explain what hydration is and why it is so important to health and wellbeing
  • Describe the problems arising from poor hydration
  • How to meet the challenge of encouraging those we care for to improve fluid intake
  • Remind ourselves of why good nutrition and hydration are important and how we can achieve this
