Introduction to Mental Health

Learners will gain an understanding of the importance of mental health disorders and a basic knowledge of depression, bi-polar disorder, schizophrenia and personality disorders They will increase their ability to manage and care for those who present with mental health disorders adopting a person centred approach.

Outcomes

By the end of the session learners will be able to:

  • Explain the differences between mental health and mental illness
  • Describe the stigma that is attached to mental health disorders and how it may affect the individual, their family and the community
  • Differentiate between the facts and misconceptions surrounding mental health disorders
  • Outline the legislation that is applicable to the care of those with a mental health disorder
  • Describe each of the following: depression, bi-polar disorder, schizophrenia and personality disorders
  • Recognising behavioural indicators symptomatic of mental health disorders

Course Content:

  • Defining the term mental health and mental illness
  • Stigma, perceptions and myths associated with mental health disorders
  • Legislation to the care of those with a mental health disorder
  • Defining the following terms, its signs, symptoms and treatment for:
    • Depression
    • Bi-polar disorder
    • Schizophrenia
    • Personality disorder
