Diabetes

Learners will have increased knowledge and understanding of Diabetes Mellitus Type 1 and Type 2.  They will be able to identify causes and symptoms and complications associated with the disorder.

Outcomes

At the end of the session learners will be able to:

  • Have an awareness of what is an increasingly major health disorder in the modern population
  • Explain Diabetes Mellitus
  • Give statistics relating to the increased occurrence of diabetes in the population
  • Explain the importance of the pancreas and the role of insulin in the human metabolism
  • Describe Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes and symptoms
  • Explain what treatments are available for each type
  • Describe some acute and chronic associated complications

Course content:

  • What is Diabetes Mellitus
  • Statistics relating to the occurrence within the UK population
  • Human Metabolism – The role of the pancreas and insulin production
  • Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes – symptoms and treatments
  • Hyperglycaemia and Hypoglycaemia – symptoms and treatments
  • Ketoacidosis
  • Associated acute and chronic complications
