Fire Warden

 Outcomes

An interactive session designed to enable management and key staff to understand the nature of fire and to develop a strategy for effective fire prevention or limit the effects of a fire outbreak. The course will provide the necessary guidance on how to handle a suspected or real fire incident including the evacuation of premises. Prepared in accordance with Fire Authority guidelines it will stress the need for a co-ordinated and quick response and the importance of an effective chain of communication.

Course content:

  • Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005
  • Explanation of the nature of combustion, description of the triangle of fire, causes of fire and sources of ignition
  • Preventing fire, the importance of fire-doors and other basic fire prevention measures, where appropriate, the safe use of and risks from storing or working with highly flammable and explosive substances, and the importance of general fire safety, which includes good housekeeping
  • Evacuation procedures on discovering a fire, how to raise the alarm, what to do upon hearing the fire alarm, role of members of staff
  • Arrangements for visitors/contractors/members of the public
  • Assembly point location
  • Explanation of when and how to use extinguishers with practice using a fire extinguisher to put out a real controlled fire
  • Where appropriate, how to stop machines, appliances and processes and isolate power/gas supplies in the event of a fire
  • Arrangements for evacuating people with a disability
  • Awareness of human behaviour in fires
  • An understanding of the purpose of any fixed fire fighting equipment such as sprinklers or gas flooding systems
  • Reporting of faults, incidents and near misses
  • Practical use of fire extinguishers
